4 Essential Steps to a Good Skincare Routine

So you’ve probably been to a department store such as Walmart, or Target, and wandered down the dreaded and somewhat overwhelming skincare aisle. At some point, have you ever thought “what is the point of all of these products”? While it may seem intimidating and excessive, there are actually plenty of logical reasons as to why stores would carry such a large selection of skincare products. First of all, not everyone is so lucky to have perfect, clear and silky skin. Some people even experience the worst skin problems like stretch marks or scarring from childhood. So, before going to the stores, you should learn more at Skin Helpers about what you need and what’s best for your skin to save time. Sometimes you have to deal with acne and all you can see on your bathroom shelve is a range of anti-acne products recommended by clearawayacne. They have the best range of products to meet everyone’s problem plus very helpful and knowledgable customer support.

To understand why there are so many over the counter acne products, first consider this: everyone has a different kind of skin concerns, types, and needs. I mean, at some point you may have noticed you either have: dry, oily or sensitive skin. When you consider different skin types, budgets, and needs, it’s easy to understand why stores have such a diverse section.

Not to mention, there are 4 different steps to every skincare routine. The steps depend on the desired results and complexity of the person. However, it is standard for the following steps: cleansing, toning, exfoliating, and moisturizing. While this does seem like a lot, when you understand the reasoning for it, it begins to make a lot of sense. Let’s discuss the 4 essential steps to a good skincare routine.

1- Cleansing the Skin

Have you ever heard of cleansers, face washes, or clearing soap? They’re all essentially the same thing. The purpose of cleansing the skin is to remove dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin. Have you been sweating all day from physical activity? Do you work in a polluted city or environment? Do you work outside in the dirt, grass, and pollen? These are just a few examples of how your skin can become dirty throughout the day.

Let’s discuss how cleansers work. Cleansers contain surfactants, also known as surface cleaning agents. Surfactants work to lower the surface tension of the skin, and the dirt and gunk above it. They also help to dissolve oil and other impurities. When you mix cleansers with water, it creates a foam that will gently ‘cleanse’ the skin.

Once your skin is clean and feeling fresh, you know the cleanser has done its job. However, your skin should not feel overly tight or dry, as this is a sign your skin is dehydrated.

2- Toning the Skin

Toning is actually an optional step and is totally not necessary. The role of the toner is to actually completely remove any remaining residue from the cleanser. If you use a completely water soluble cleanser, you can actually skip this entire step. However, toners are generally cheap and easy to use. So no harm in using this step as a precaution. It’s entirely up to you.

3- Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a process that naturally helps remove excess dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. Over time, these materials can build up on the skin, leading to blocked pores and breakouts. This is why exfoliation is suggested as a critical part to a good skincare routine.

There are two different types of exfoliation: chemical and physical. We’ll discuss physical first.

Physical exfoliation is the means of using an abrasive such as: sand, clay, and microbeads. These little materials can help to remove dirt, buildup, etc. on the skin as you wash away impurities. However, physical exfoliation can sometimes be worry sum for sensitive skin as the materials can scratch and irritate the skin. Only use physical exfoliation gently, and 1-2x a week, or as needed.

The second kind is chemical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation uses cosmetic acids such as salicylic or glycolic acid to naturally help remove dead skin cells. By using a quality chemical exfoliant, you can expect to reveal bright, radiant beauty, beneath the skin.

4- Moisturizing the Skin

Moisturizers are the last step of the skincare routine. During the cleaning process, you can strip away natural and essential oils on the surface of the skin. This completely strips all moisture and can cause dry, flaky skin. By using a light moisturizer formulated to your skin type, you can expect a good, smooth and calm complexion.

Now that you understand the skincare process, and why each step is important, you should be able to walk down the beauty section of a department store without feeling too overwhelmed.
