How to Handle a Recruitment Agency

Working with a recruitment service can give you access to some of the best employers.  Many have gone to use recruitment agencies as these agencies have perfected their recruiting skills and are far better at what they do than Human Resources.

The human resources department has so many other responsibilities this day and age that it is hard for them to keep up with the ever-changing technology of recruiting.  There are so many more ways to recruit than ever before and so many different means to access both people and their information. But how should you handle a recruitment agency?

Be on Time

In the job-seeking market timing is everything.  Your recruiter may call you and you need to call or respond immediately.  Timing is everything and they may be competing with other recruiters. This is your time to shine, you have to call now.

Recruiters are probably not a good choice when you are thinking about a career change.  Their jobs and how they get paid is securing people in new positions. They are going to promote those candidates that meet and exceed all of the qualifications.

This may mean that it is not you, since, you have not worked in this area before. You may need to seek our a position yourself and remember, a career change may be a step down on the pay scale, but it is all worth it if you are enjoying your work more or have more time for family.  Whatever the reason for the career change, you will be your biggest advocate with it.

Answer their questions.  When you see an advert out there, it usually has things in it they are looking for.  Treat the ad as a question and answer it with a properly written cover letter. In this letter guide them down a path of why you are the perfect choice for the job by hitting the very points they put in their advert.

Be Honest Even if they always aren’t

Don’t be surprised if you see a job that is too good to be true be filled quickly.  This does not mean that the job actually existed. Some agencies put out too good to be true ads to gather in more candidates into their recruiting company.

This is not best practice and in some areas is illegal so they will tell you thanks for the inquiry and the position has been filled. They will keep your information and contact you should something come up.

Don’t Spend Money

You shouldn’t have to spend money to get a job.  In fact, unless you are a famous actress or musician it is not legal to charge people for finding them work.

The way that recruiters are paid is by the employers. The employers pay them to sift through the countless resumes and help filter out the candidates into something manageable and reasonable.  Although they are great for both parties, the companies are the ones that are really getting a benefit here and are who the recruiters are sided with.
