Gasoline-powered appliances aren’t especially friendly to the environment. After all, where do you think all those fumes go? But they are very powerful and good at their jobs, so many people continue to use them: The good news is that electric versions of our gas-powered yard appliances are now widely available, and have become powerful enough to be easy competitors to the gas-powered versions.
So, if you want to do your part to help clean the air and protect the atmosphere, it may finally be time to replace some of your yard tools with electric versions. And don’t forget, battery-powered versions of your appliances will never need gas or oil maintenance, and they tend to be a lot safer than their gasoline counterparts, so you benefit a lot, too! Here are several of the top replacements to keep in mind.
LawnMaster CLMFT6018A 60V Electric Mower
Lawnmaster’s electric mower is versatile and powerful enough for mid-sized lawns.
Price: $400 at Amazon
Years ago, electric lawnmowers weren’t making much of an impact on the market. Many models were corded (which is impractical for mowing) and quality wasn’t great. These days, however, electric mowers are cordless and can easily hold their own against gas mowers thanks to powerful modern batteries. This LawnMaster version includes options for mulching, bagging, and side discharge, along with power modes to customize your cutting power – plus, you never need to change the oil or buy new gas for it. The battery is rated at around 45 minutes of runtime, although in Gadget Review‘s in our in-depth review we found this to be a conservative estimate for a fully charged 60V battery.
Black + Decker LST136W 40V MAX String Trimmer
An electric weedeater is superior to the often-tricky gas version.
Price: $145 at Amazon
Once again, powerful lithium batteries come to the rescue. The 40V Black + Decker battery in this string trimmer provides all the power you need to edge your lawn and cut back weeds at will…and let us tell you, weed cutters benefit greatly from skipping the gas engine in favor of a battery. They are infinitely easier to start, safer to use, and more pleasant to be around thanks to low noise levels and no fumes. This model comes with modes to either increase power or preserves battery life based on your project, and switch between trimmer and edger with a simple angle twist option on the shaft.
A side not about these Black + Decker electric products – B+D designs many of its appliance battery to be interchangeable. If you are a fan of B+D products, look for electric models that use the same type of battery, so you can easily be switched around a fleet of B+D batteries as needed!
Worx Turbine 12-Ample Corded Leaf Blower
The Worx model provides all the air power you need without relying on gas.
Price: $56 at Amazon
Worx is another trusted name in electric yard appliances and offers a highly affordable, effective leaf blower that only weighs 6.4 pounds – probably a lot lighter than the last gas blower you used. Yet it provides 600 CFM output with variable speed control to take care of any grass, dust or leaves that you need to gather (or disperse). Note that this model is corded. Cords don’t matter much on blowers the way they do on mowers and weedeaters – there’s very little impact to performance and safety as long as you have a couple outdoor outlets around your house. However, Worx does produce cordless blowers if you prefer a cordless alternative for larger properties.
LawnMaster FD1501 Electric Chipper/Shredder
LawnMaster’s chipper provides an eco-friendly way to take care of branches and shrubs.
Price: <arel=”nofollow” href=”https://www.amazon.com/LawnMaster-FD1501-Electric-Chipper-Shredder/dp/B004352KE2″>$105 at Amazon
This electric chipper/shredder can easily stand up to gas versions around the same price thanks to a 15-amp motor. It’s rated for 1 to 1/2-inch branches and anything smaller, although you may want to get hardwood branches a bit smaller than you would softwoods. It’s ideal for trimming trees and clearing brush around your home, and the 8-inch wheels make for easy mobility, too! It comes with a durable lid, large handles, a push stick for forcing branches down, and a collection bag. There’s also an overload protector to make sure the equipment stays safe.
Dewalt DCCS620P1 20V Mac Compact Cordless Chainsaw Kit
This compact chainsaw is lightweight and easy to maintain, making it ideal for larger projects
Price: $290 at Amazon
Have a few bigger projects to tackle? This compact cordless chainsaw provides all the power you need without any gas motor to manage. It comes with as 12-inch Oregon-style chain and particularly fast, tool-free chain tension management. The battery-powered motor is particularly easy to notice on a chainsaw like this. The low 8.8-pound weight makes it much easier to maneuver, and the battery doesn’t create nearly as much kickback as a gas motor would. Like many electric appliances, you can buy this chainsaw without a battery, but we suggest you always buy them together when possible!
