What to Delegate When Running a Small Business

When running any business there is a limited chance that you can do everything yourself and even in a small business, this is true. It makes sense for many reasons and not all of them are to do with the workload. You cannot possibly be an expert in everything and although it makes sense to have at least a basic understanding of all aspects of what’s going on it pays to delegate some matters to those with more expertise than yourself.

Book-Keeping & Accounting

One such area is certainly the financials. Not only can be it be hugely time-consuming, especially when it’s not your regular job and you don’t fully understand all the complexities of tax and accounting. You can very easily make very costly mistakes this way. A good book-keeper and accountant will easily pay for themselves and free you up to do what you do best, which is running the business.

Sales

Not every good entrepreneur is automatically a good sales-person. Often you do get the two going hand in hand and the person with the great idea is a fantastic orator with the ability to get the benefits of a product over to the customer. Sometimes though this is not the case and getting the highest amount of sales possible is the key aspect of any good business. Let’s take the example of the George Foreman Grill, a spectacularly successful product that we are all aware of if not an owner of, but if think about it we should know that it wasn’t invented by a retired boxer, he even says in the commercial, that he “put his name on it”, not that he invented it. It was actually invented by a man named Michael W. Boehm, whose company figured out that it was best to sell it in this way. The moral being the Foreman grill would drastically outsell the Boehm grill.

Design

Getting marketing material out there is key in any business and all of this needs to be designed. If there is one thing that stands out and pokes a potential customer in the eye it’s amateur design work, and not in a good way. An unprofessional looking advert says to a customer, this is an unprofessional company. So why not get some graphic design help as you must get the message out there in the correct way.

Marketing

You may know who you want to target as a customer and what is good about your product, but you can’t always expect to know what the next big thing in marketing is. A good and focused campaign is essential.

Management

It’s often taken for granted that a business owner is the boss. But what if you aren’t a good people person, you lack the knack for keeping discipline or you even struggle to assess potential staff and are poor at choosing staff. Then there’s no shame in hiring a good manager to take care of these tasks for you. It may even be that you just don’t have the time for everything. They can take care of the day to day and you can be left to sort out the vision and direction of the company.
