How to Prepare Your Macbook and Improve Its Performance

You should not expect a Macbook to perform at its best forever. While the macOS and Apple computers are known for their longevity. Sooner or later, they also begin to underperform, and it becomes a bit problematic to use the computer, especially when you have to do your work with it.

Some people begin to think that the only solution is to get rid of the current model and purchase a new one. While that is an option, there are better ways to go about the problem. Ways that are wallet-friendly. If you are looking to improve the Macbook’s performance and enjoy using it like you did when you first got it, continue reading.

Way #1 – Make More Disk Space

Lack of disk space is one of the most common problems for an underperforming Macbook. A lot of people are unable to fit every file, and they run out of disk space. You can make the issue disappear by doing the following:

  • Using software that can clean up mac and get rid of temporary junk files like old caches, app extensions, plugins, and backups.
  • Transferring some data to cloud-based services like iCloud or Dropbox.
  • Subscribing to streaming services, so you do not need to keep media files.
  • Deleting old applications that can be redownloaded later in case you need to use them again.
  • Checking your mail and download folders for old attachments and downloads.
  • Emptying the trash bin because dragging icons there does not remove files from the computer completely.

Way #2 – Clean Dust and Dirt

Dust and dirt accumulate over time, and if you are not cleaning all that filth inside, you will run into problems eventually. The dust and dirt can lead to internal hardware problems and cause overheating. Overworking internal fans will not last for a long time.

If you are worried about doing the cleaning yourself, take the Macbook to someone who is professional and will do a thorough job. You will have to pay, but there will be no need to worry about risking damaging the computer.

Way #3 – Purchase a Cooling Pad

A cooling pad is another way to deal with the temperatures. The investment is not that expensive, and it can also function as a resting place for when your Macbook is static.

Dealing with high temperatures in summer can be too much for any computer, and if you are still stuck working and the air conditioner in the room is not cutting it anymore, a cooling pad will come to rescue the Macbook.

Way #4 – Turn off Visuals

Most people probably think that visuals are only consuming battery life. However, things are a bit different, and if you are looking to get the most out of your current Macbook, you will want to make some adjustments in the visuals settings.

Go to the Dock via System Preferences and untick the boxes from both “Automatically hide and show the Dock” as well as “Animate opening applications.” There is also a “Minimize windows using” section. Change the Genie effect to the Scale effect.

Way #5 – Pay Attention to Activity Monitor

Activity Monitor shows which processes are consuming the most resources and putting the biggest strain on the system. Open the tool and sort the applications by either memory or CPU usage.

The applications on the top are the biggest problem. There will be some that are an integral part of the system and cannot be removed. However, you should be able to find apps that are taking too much and do not offer a lot in return.

For instance, if you have a website browser that is consuming too much memory, try using an alternative. It may be that another browser will not be so resource-hungry.

Way #6 – Scan for Malware and Viruses

Malware and viruses could be the biggest issue. A number of people believe that Macbooks are safe from such threats, and they do not bother installing anti-virus software. Personal computers may not be targeted as much, but if you are using a Macbook from work, who knows what will happen.

Do not take the risk. Instead of being uncertain, install anti-virus software, and have peace of mind. It is better to be safe than sorry, and when finding good anti-virus for free is so simple, it is difficult to fathom why some still choose not to install it.

Way #7 – Restart Mac Regularly

Regular restarts prevent what is known as memory leaks. A few restarts a day is a good number, though if you are using the Macbook for an extended period, increasing the number of restarts is also fine.

If you have to wait for everything to load after each restart, trim the startup item list. The applications that you are not using immediately after the computer loads should not be in the login application list.
